Following the devastation caused by Cyclone Jasper in 2022, the township of Bloomfield experienced significant flooding, with large sections of the community submerged underwater. The extreme weather event also triggered multiple landslips along Bloomfield Road, severely impacting access to the remote Indigenous community of Wujal Wujal.

GRC Civil was engaged to restore a critical section of Bloomfield Road, the primary access route connecting the community to essential services and surrounding regions.

The scope of works included:

• 2,400m³ of earthworks and cut-to-spoil operations
• Drainage improvements
• Construction staging to maintain trafficability of the existing roadway
• Installation of gravels, sealing and asphalt surfacing

Despite the challenges associated with the project’s remote location and limited resource availability, works were successfully completed on time and within budget. During delivery, GRC Civil also proposed an alternative design solution to accelerate construction and improve overall project efficiency.

A key challenge of the project involved undertaking remediation works on an active landslip while maintaining safe traffic access for the Wujal Wujal community throughout construction. Careful planning, staging, and coordination were critical to ensuring continued connectivity and a successful project outcome.
